Understanding Dental Insurance

A plain language guide to dental benefits, so you can make confident decisions about your care.

Dental insurance can be one of the most confusing parts of caring for your smile. Terms like in-network, out-of-network, deductible, and annual maximum are rarely explained clearly, which leaves many patients unsure of what they actually owe.

At Encore Dentist, we believe a little clarity goes a long way. This guide explains the basics so you can make informed decisions about your care across our three offices.

How Dental Benefits Work

Most dental plans cover preventive care, such as cleanings and exams, at a high percentage, while restorative and major treatments are covered at lower levels. Plans also include a deductible you pay first, a coinsurance percentage you share, and an annual maximum, which is the most the plan will pay in a year. Knowing these numbers helps you plan ahead.

Comparing Common Plan Types

The table below summarizes how the most common arrangements work.

Plan Type Provider Choice How You Pay Good If
PPO Any dentist, in or out of network Lower out-of-pocket in network, reimbursement out of network You want flexibility to choose your dentist
HMO In network only Set copays, little out of network coverage You want the lowest premiums and stay in network
Fee for Service Any dentist Pay and submit for reimbursement at plan rates You want maximum freedom of choice
In-house Membership Our practice One simple fee, no insurer involved You do not have dental insurance

In Network Compared With Out of Network

An in-network dentist has agreed to an insurer’s fee schedule, while an out-of-network dentist has not. As an out-of-network practice, we are free to recommend the care that is genuinely best for you. If you have a PPO plan, you can usually still use your benefits with us and receive reimbursement for covered care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my insurance at an out-of-network office?

In most cases, yes. PPO plans usually include out-of-network benefits, and we will help you file claims.

It is the most your plan will pay toward your care in a plan year. Once you reach it, you are responsible for additional costs that year.

Most plans do not cover purely cosmetic treatment, though they may cover restorative care that also improves appearance. We will help you understand what applies.

Our in-house membership plan and financing are designed for exactly that situation and make regular care affordable.
