Graduations, weddings, new jobs, and family reunions all come with photos, and few things change a picture faster than a brighter smile. Everyday coffee, tea, soda, and sauces can leave teeth looking dull long before you notice it in the mirror.
Encore Dentist provides professional teeth whitening at our American Canyon office on Main Street, with early weekday hours that make it easier to fit treatment into a busy week. Whitening is a popular starting point for cosmetic dentistry in American Canyon because it is quick, comfortable, and affordable.
Professional Whitening Versus Store Kits
Drugstore strips and toothpastes can help with light surface stains, but they have limits, and they cannot tell whether a stain sits on the surface or inside the tooth. Professional whitening offers several advantages.
- Stronger gel: dentist-grade whitening agents reach deeper stains than over-the-counter products.
- Gum protection: your dentist shields your gums so the gel stays on your teeth.
- Even results: professional application reduces the blotchy look some store kits leave behind.
- Sensitivity control: your dentist can adjust strength and timing if your teeth feel sensitive.
Most importantly, a dentist checks for cavities or gum problems first, so whitening does not mask an issue that needs treatment. Whitening also works best on clean teeth, so a cleaning beforehand can help.
Dr. Kevin Cabugao
Because of my commitment to excellence some have labeled me as somewhat of a perfectionist… Although true to a certain extent, I disagree. Without the fear of being wrong, I sincerely care about everything I do and try my best to do it well.”
Born in Hawaii and raised in Vallejo, Kevin Cabugao received his BS in Genetics at the University of California at Davis and worked in biotechnology before refocusing his energies towards graduate school. While Kevin found his work in the pharmaceutical industry rewarding, he felt unsatisfied with his career and sought an education that would best complement his enthusiasm for helping others with his understanding of the sciences. With this intention, he received his MBA from California State University East Bay and DDS from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. Currently, he is an active member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association as a part of the Board of Component Relations and has served as the former President of the Napa/Solano Dental Society.
When away from the office, Kevin enjoys listening to music, snowboarding and honing his martial arts as a 4th degree Kajukenbo black belt with over 30 years of experience!

Dr. Paul Belusko
Born and raised in Oregon, Dr. Paul Belusko earned his degree in Biochemistry from Portland State where it was while working in Biotechnology that he realized his calling to serve others was best expressed as a compassionate care provider within dentistry. Soon after, Dr. Belusko attended dental school at Columbia University and graduated with high honors.
During this time, he had the privilege of volunteering as a student dentist serving throughout the rural parts of Jamaica and joined a hospital residency at Mount Sinai School of Medicine that partnered with the nearby Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital in the Bronx. As a resident he worked on complex dental cases and added advanced dental implant techniques to his clinical practice. With a surgical skill set greater than most general dentists, Dr. Paul has also earned his fellowship with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.
After residency, Dr. Belusko returned to the West Coast to serve our veterans at the Washington State VA for several years. Soon after, he travelled south with his wife back to her home state of California, settling down in Napa to be closer to her family and to enjoy the natural beauty of our region as an avid skier, hiker and cyclist. With his wife, keeping his family and community first, Dr. Paul has two children and enjoys mentoring to the local youth as a Napa County 4-H leader in archery and at 4-H camp.
What a Clinical Trial Found About Whitening
Professional whitening has been studied closely. In a 2021 randomized trial of 130 volunteers published in the Journal of Applied Oral Science, both in-office and at-home bleaching were effective, and tooth sensitivity rates were similar for the two techniques. The participants were adults between 18 and 40.
In that trial, the in-office group reported more sensitivity only on the first day. That is helpful to know if you are planning around an event, and it is a good reason to schedule whitening a few days before a big occasion. Using a desensitizing toothpaste for a week or two beforehand may also help.
Planning Whitening Around Your Family Calendar
Timing matters when there is a wedding, prom, or holiday card on the way. Booking a few weeks ahead gives you room to adjust your shade and lets any temporary sensitivity settle. A short runway also leaves time for a touch-up if you want an extra shade or two.
Parents often ask whether teenagers can whiten too. Whitening is generally best once all permanent teeth are in and healthy, and our dentists can let you know whether it makes sense for your teen. Teens in braces or finishing orthodontic treatment may need to wait until that work is done.
When Whitening Is Not Enough
Whitening only lightens natural enamel. Crowns, fillings, and very deep stains, such as those from certain medications or an old injury, may not change much. Teeth that look gray rather than yellow are often harder to lighten.
In those cases, porcelain veneers in American Canyon can cover discoloration for the long term, and an American Canyon smile makeover can coordinate whitening with other treatments for a more complete change. Your dentist can show you which option fits your goals and budget.
Whitening Costs and Insurance
Most dental plans treat whitening as cosmetic and do not cover it. It remains one of the most budget-friendly ways to update your smile, and you receive a clear price before treatment. Because results often last one to three years, the cost per year can be quite low.
If whitening is part of a larger plan, our out-of-network dental care team can explain what your PPO may reimburse for restorative portions, and financing is available for bigger treatment plans.

Whitening Questions
How white can my teeth get?
Results vary with your natural shade and the type of staining. Most people see a noticeable change, and we help you choose a shade that looks bright yet natural. Teeth with yellow tones usually respond best.
How long does professional whitening take?
In-office whitening is often completed in a single visit, and most people return to work the same day. Your dentist can explain the timeline for the option that fits your goals.
Will whitening make my teeth sensitive?
Some people notice mild, temporary sensitivity. It usually fades within a day or two, and we can adjust your treatment to keep you comfortable.
How do I keep my teeth white after treatment?
Limit coffee, tea, soda, and dark sauces for the first couple of days, rinse with water after stain-causing drinks, and keep up with regular cleanings. Touch-ups once or twice a year can help maintain your shade.
Can I whiten my teeth before a wedding?
Yes. We suggest booking a few weeks before the event so there is time to fine-tune your shade and let any sensitivity settle.
